 Crest for Promoted to Glory



Mrs. Brigadier Audrey M. Beringer (R) was recently promoted to Glory from the Sunbridge Care Center in Pleasant Hills, Calif.

Audrey Depperman was born in 1905 in Portland, Ore., to a Salvationist family. She was commissioned in 1927 with the Fidelity Session and married Lieutenant John Beringer in 1928. They served together in several corps assignments. During World War II they operated a Red Shield servicemen’s club and a dormitory for wives and babies of the servicemen. They lost Ruth Ann, their first child, in 1944 at the age of 10.

In 1951 they were transferred from corps work into the Men’s Social Service Department, serving in Stockton, Sacramento, Portland, and Tacoma.

The Beringers retired in 1970 to Citrus Heights, Calif., where they were active soldiers of the Sacramento and North Sacramento Corps for another 26 years. In 1997 they moved to the Baywood Care Center to be near their family and soldiered at the Concord Corps. He was promoted to Glory that year. Audrey was an avid reader and a talented artist.

A memorial service was held at the Concord Corps with Major Bill Nottle, corps officer, speaking. She is survived by her son, John David, his wife, Patricia, five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Messages of sympathy may be sent to her son at 22 Kilgo Court, Pleasant Hills CA 94523.


Mrs. Brigadier Elsie A. Bowyer (R) was recently promoted to Glory from the home of her daughter in Phoenix, Ariz.

Elsie Dunn was born in London, England to Salvationist parents in 1912. She was brought to Canada as a small girl, but her health problems caused her family to move to California. They soldiered at the Congress Hall Corps and later transferred to the Los Angeles #2 Corps, where she was an active soldier and songster. She was commissioned as part of the Do and Dare Session in 1934.

In 1935 she married Captain Norman Bowyer, and together they served in Men’s Social and corps assignments. In 1942 they became Youth Secretaries for the Intermountain and Border Divisions. For their final 20 years they served at Evangeline Residences in Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

After retiring in 1968 they worked at the Southwest DHQ and soldiered at the Phoenix Citadel.

A memorial service was held at the Phoenix Citadel with Major Harry Lacey officiating. Interment was at Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, Calif., with Secretary for Personnel Colonel Donald Sather speaking.

Her husband pre-deceased her in 1997. Surviving are her daughter, Florence Brice, son-in-law Calvin, two grandsons and two great-grandchildren. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to Mrs. Florence Brice, 1208 W Ruth St., Phoenix AZ 85021.
