Crest for Promoted to Glory

Major Hope Guernsey Carpenter (R) was recently promoted to Glory from a nursing home in Scottsdale, Ariz. She was 88 years old.

Hope was born in 1909 in Van Horne, Iowa, and commissioned a probationary lieutenant in 1929. Her first appointment was Charles City, Iowa, followed by several other corps appointments in Illinois.

In 1958 she transferred to the Western Territory and was appointed to command the Redondo Beach, Calif. Corps. In 1962 she was put in charge of the Waioli Tea Room in Honolulu, where she found a wonderful opportunity for service.

Other appointments were finance officer at the School for Officers’ Training, Southwest Divisional Headquarters and director of the Family Service Bureau in Phoenix. Her last appointment before retirement in 1974 was as director of the Senior Citizens Program in Phoenix.

In retirement she lived in Phoenix, in Bakersfield, Calif., and Mesa, Ariz, always supporting many corps programs, until failing health kept her from doing so.

A funeral service was held at the Southside Baptist Church in Tempe, Ariz.

Hope is survived by one daughter, Dene Kegerreis. Messages of sympathy may be sent to Dene at 2401 W. Southern Ave., Space 417, Tempe AZ 85282.
