HARD WORK BY Girl Scouts will aid needy families throughout the San Diego area.

The “Be Your Best and Do a Good Turn 2003” clothing drive, a joint project of the San Diego ARC and Girl Scouts, San Diego-Imperial Council, generated a record-breaking 160 tons of donations.

More than 10,000 Girl Scouts participated, as did hundreds of people in the areas surrounding each of the seven donation sites.

The annual clothing drive benefits The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC); donations support ARC services, and whatever cannot be used or sold is recycled through The Salvation Army’s recycling center.

“The clothing drive came just in time to give our inventories a big boost and meet the emergency needs of the fire victims,” said Major Doug Williams, San Diego ARC administrator. “We are so grateful to the Girl Scouts and the community for their tremendous support.”

As part of the program, Girl Scouts also toured Army facilities, including the ARC and recycling center. Girls heard from the residents of the ARC about how drugs and alcohol affected their own lives and those of their loved ones, how the residents are benefiting from the ARC program and what they now plan to do with their lives. Meeting some of the beneficiaries helped Girl Scouts clearly see how their efforts really can make a difference.
