Thanks to The Salvation Army and generous community support, Mervyn’s Department Stores once again sent children back to school looking their best. The Army solicits donations to match Mervyn’s generous gift.

Thanks to overwhelming community support in Tucson, 175 children were assisted–the best ChildSpree ever!

Children in San Jose, Santa Clara and Morgan Hill got to choose $100 worth of clothing, uniforms, and shoes, with school supplies and a festive breakfast thrown in. Volunteer chaperones went along to help get the most out of the allowance. There was friendly competition to see who could do the best with the gift certificate. Most went away with two outfits, shoes and socks for the school year.

A chaperone shared one touching moment, summing up why this event is so important.

After they went through the children’s section picking out clothing for the boy, he said that he had a 3-year-old brother at home, and he felt he should share with him what he was receiving. Fortunately they found that there was enough money left to buy a gift for the brother.

Nationwide, ChildSpree benefits 15,000 disadvantaged children. Mervyn’s California matches every dollar raised, up to $3,000 per store, with an additional ten percent discount on all merchandise.
