Becoming a bridge builder

At the Colorado Springs Corps, we were recently challenged by our pastor, Envoy Jim Mertz, to “reach one million souls for the Lord” by building “Bridges to Eternity.” My first reaction was how could I do this? I don’t know a million people! Even with help from the corps soldiers and friends, it still seemed too difficult a task.

I pondered the subject and prayed. Later that week, I received a surprise visit from a neighbor who was having a difficult time. Here was an opportunity to share the love of Christ and help her through her predicament.

I then discovered a variety of ways to witness. I began to work with the junior soldier class. I asked all the children how they were serving the Lord and challenged them to share their faith with their friends. Not all of the junior soldiers had families who attend our church and God opened doors for me to witness to their parents through phone calls, letters and emails.

I started making home visits and talking to people in the grocery store. I learned ways to witness to the sick and those in need.

I am reminded of the Scripture, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give hope and a future (Jeremiah 20:21).

God continues to open doors for us. He has great plans for us if we seek his will. I don’t know what direction he will lead me, but I know he has a perfect plan for me. I’m excited and hopeful that our corps will reach a million or more souls during our journey over the Bridges to Eternity.
