Salvation Army corps and centers throughout the West are invited to participate in a weekend of basketball, fellowship and worship at the 8th Annual Doris Verbout Memorial Salvationist Basketball Tournament.
Hosted by the Portland Moore Street Corps, Ore., the tournament will take place May 12-15, 2005.

The long weekend will include both men’s and women’s tournaments, with games being held at the Moore Street Corps and at gymnasiums of nearby Concordia University and Portland Community College. Each evening, participants will gather back at the corps for a time of worship featuring rousing praise and a special guest speaker, followed by fellowship and recreation at the corps community center facilities.

The weekend wraps up on Sunday with participants joining the Moore Street Corps’ congregation in worship, followed by the final championship games and an award ceremony.

Last year’s tournament brought together 10 men’s teams and four women’s teams representing Salvation Army corps and centers in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for Salvationists to come together for a lot of fun,” explains Captain Donna Marshall, Moore Street corps officer. “It’s like a big family reunion.”

This annual tournament honors the life and memory of Doris Verbout, long-time soldier of the Portland Moore Street Corps and basketball aficionado. As much as Doris enjoyed the NBA—especially the Portland Trailblazers—her real passion was cheering on her corps and ARC teams as they played at Moore Street tournaments. After her promotion to Glory in 1999 from Lou Gehrig’s disease, this newly-formed tournament was re-named in her honor.

Tournament participation costs $200 per team, with a $100 deposit required to hold a team spot. Registered teams are guaranteed to play at least three games during the weekend. The deadline for registration is March 29, 2005. Please contact Tim Fuqua at the Portland Moore Street Corps (tim_fuqua@usw.salvationarmy.org) for more details about how your corps or center can be involved in this exciting event.
