Mike Verbout, a Portland Moore Street Corps soldier and member of the Portland Metro board, was recently honored at the 31st annual Spirit of Portland Awards with a Commissioner’s Award.
Portland Commissioner Amanda Fritz presented it to Verbout for demonstrating outstanding dedication to positive change for the community.
Verbout taught for 33 years in Portland Public Schools District, and introduced the first Dual-Language Immersion Program. In 2011, he founded the Roosevelt High School Alumni Association and continues to be the president and the association’s most active supporter.
Verbout volunteers at The Salvation Army, Loaves and Fishes, Meals on Wheels, Peninsula Kiwanis and Portland Optimist Club. Each year, Verbout raises money for the ALS Association’s research in honor of his mother.
