The Salvation Army in Birmingham, Ala., provided food, drinks, coats and shoes for emergency personnel and victims after a Dec.17 pre-dawn explosion destroyed a Gate City apartment complex.

Eight people—five children and three adults—were hospitalized with crushing injuries and burns; one woman was killed.

An investigation will determine the cause of the blast, which many residents believe was a gas leak.
