SA on Sirius
The Salvation Army radio program, Wonderful Words of Life is now available on Sirius XM Satellite Radio. In production for over 50 years, this 15-minute weekly program may be heard on Sundays at 5:30 a.m. (PST) over XM channel 170 (Family Talk programmed by Salem Media). San Diego kicks off Cool Zone
The El Cajon Corps, Calif., was the site for San Diego County’s Cool Zone Kickoff. The Army’s senior dining and social centers are among designated locations where older adults and handicapped people may go for relief from the heat. Captain Darren Norton, corps officer, welcomed the 50 people gathered for the opening, and Supervisor Diane Jacob, who created the Cool Zones, handed out popsicles to the seniors who regularly dine at the corps.

‘Gloves not guns’ in Denver
The Denver Red Shield Community Center boxing program was chosen as a boxing host location—one of only six nationwide—for a national program, Gloves Not Guns, sanctioned by USA Boxing. Upon completion of the six-week program, graduates receive a free one-year membership to USA boxing, the national governing body for Olympic-style boxing. The Red Shield has about 50 young men and women training for matches; several prepared for the USA National Championships, which were held in Denver recently.

Off to ICO
Major Rhonda Lloyd will be a delegate at the International College for Officers (ICO) from October 14 through December 2, 2009, in Session 203.

Byrd to NHQ
Jennifer Byrd, public relations director for the West’s Golden State Division, has been selected as the Army’s new national director of public relations. “Jennifer comes to national headquarters with exceptional credentials and experience,” said Major George Hood, national community relations and development secretary. “I believe all of us will benefit from the professional gifts she will bring to this environment.”
