VALERIE WALKS BY FAITH
Major Becky Sparks, Roswell, N. Mex. corps officer, reports that third grader Valerie Flores, junior soldier and member of YP Singing Company, won third place in her school talent contest. She sang a song she learned in Singing Company, “Walk By Faith.” The song is based on John 14:6 and Hebrews 11:1.
OGDEN RECYCLES LIVES
According to Dallas Pederson, the city of Ogden, Utah invited The Salvation Army to participate in “Recycle Day” (Earth Day). Tables were set up at Newgate Mall which depicted the theme of “recycle.” A bale of used textiles and one of cardboard were on display with a variety of handouts telling about the Thrift Store and Adult Rehabilitation Programs. A banner proclaiming, “We Recycle Lives” hung proudly between the U.S. flag and The Salvation Army flag. Over 2,500 flyers were distributed to those who passed by.
YAKIMA ON THE MOVE
Major Deanna Sholin, Yakima, Wash. corps officer, reports the Yakima Singing Company was invited to sing at the grand opening of the local Super Wal-Mart. The group, under the direction of Singing Company Leader Su Ordaz was presented with a check for $500 from Wal-Mart.
The Yakima Home League held its 47th Annual Nursing Home Mother’s Day Luncheon, attended by 114 people. Nine nursing homes brought their residents to this special event. Captain Shawn L. Posillico, NW divisional women’s ministries secretary, was the featured speaker.
The Annual Civic Luncheon for Yakima County, attended by 312, was held with the theme, “United We Stand.” The report included the combined community efforts of the two Yakima corps as well as the River Valley Corps. Lt. Colonel Terry Griffin, Northwest DC, brought information regarding the Army’s disaster assistance on the East Coast. Griffin and Major David Sholin presented Mr. Ralph Coffey, 30-year local board member, with an Advisory Board Life Member recognition.
DEL ORO SIGNS UP JR. SOLDIERS
Del Oro Division recently enrolled 34 junior soldiers, all part of a total of 54 from the Junior Soldier preparation day. The kids wore specially designed T-shirts to commemorate this special united enrollment!
COLORADO SPRINGS KEEPS BUSY
Major Steve Owen reports that during a May visit to Colorado Springs, the national leaders of The Salvation Army participated in a variety of corps and community activities. Commissioner John Busby preached at the Colorado Springs Corps and participated in the enrollment of eight junior soldiers, an adherent and 10 senior soldiers. Commissioner Elsie Busby brought a Bible challenge at the Annual Youth & Graduates Luncheon where four middle school, one high school and three college graduates were honored.
The National Commander spoke at the Colorado Springs – El Paso County Annual Dinner, attended by 500 people. The program included music from the US Air Force Academy Cadet Chorale, a video annual report and a community award presentation to the El Pomar Foundation. Commissioner John Busby also participated in a meeting at Focus On The Family with Dr. James Dobson.
A NOTE OF APPRECIATION
Colonel Robert Tobin expresses great appreciation for the thousands of prayers offered on his behalf in his current battle with lymphoma — an inoperable growth atop his stomach. Following chemotherapy, a recent catscan has indicated a disappearance of the tumor, and doctors are now highly optimistic about his complete recovery. He reports the cards, letter, and especially the prayers have buoyed his spirit and provided a remarkable lift.
