Roseville enrolls new soldiers
Roseville, Calif., corps officers Captains Kris and Camie Potter report the enrollment of two new senior soldiers, Colleen Smalley and Ashley Brackenbury.
Colleen, 20, is making preparations to serve in Estonia for a year. She is the daughter of Major Candi Frizzell, Del Oro Community Care Ministries secretary. Ashley, 14, is a committed teen at the Roseville Corps. Her parents are Captains John and Pam Brackenbury, Del Oro divisional secretaries for Program.
Colorado Springs adds to rolls
Captain David Howarth, Colorado Springs, Colo., corps officer, reports Ronnie Platkus and Gene Turner were recently enrolled as senior soldiers—the 9th and 10th new soldiers since June 2005. Jennifer Brand was enrolled as an adherent, the first we’ve had in a long time. Captain Janet Howarth serves as corps officer with her husband.
Salem Corps helps kids
Over 14,000 families were assisted this Christmas in Salem, Ore., receiving toys, clothing and food baskets. Strong community support helped: “Two of the largest car dealerships in town brought in a combined amount of $14,042,” said Salvationist Dave West. “Bell ringers came from the corps, different service clubs, churches, school groups, city leaders—even the governor stood to ring bells.”
Ebel featured in Bakersfield Californian
Captain David Ebel, Bakersfield, Calif., corps officer, was recently recognized in Joe D. Stevenson’s weekly “How’s Business?” column in the Bakersfield Californian as a business leader who is “making Bakersfield better.” Congratulations, Captain!
Army aids flood, fire victims
Throughout the West, The Salvation Army assisted victims of fires and floods, providing housing and meals to thousands. In southern Colorado, emergency disaster relief personnel assisted first responders and evacuees of the Mauricio Canyon fire. The wildfire forced the evacuation of nearly 100 households. In Corona, Calif., Salvationists provided food and beverages to those displaced by the rising waters below the Prado Dam where 800 families were evacuated.
Responding to storms and flooding in northern California, Napa, Calif., corps officer Captain Donna Bowman reports, “We served snacks and drinks and provided an evening meal for about two dozen people at the Red Cross shelter set up at Napa High School. We also provided sandwiches for the two homeless shelters, which remained open through the storm and flood.” Additionally, a crew of advisory board members took the canteen out for several hours, serving snacks and drinks to city workers and residents doing clean up in the flood affected areas.
