For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son so that anyone who believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it.
John 3:16-17

Community caring
Major Liz Clitheroe, Southwest Divisional Community Care Secretary & Adult Ministries Secretary, reports on a recently implemented Community Care telephone ministry. “The aim of this telephone ministry is to assist the frail, aged, disabled or those medically at risk to live independently, by providing a short phone call, usually daily, to check on health and well-being. A volunteer calls at a set time. If the call isn’t answered, the call is repeated in 10 minutes. If that call isn’t answered, the caller notifies a prearranged person or makes a visit to make sure all is well.”

Oakland hosts Russians
Ten public health officials from Ulyanovsk, Russia, visited the Oakland ARC to learn about the Army’s drug/alcohol rehabilitation program. Major Laurie Heiselman, associate administrator, said “Each one was a doctor in their own right and each was the top official administrator for their respective hospitals, treatment programs, or other public health departments that they represented. At the conclusion of the visit, they commented that this Oakland ARC was one of the finest facilities they had seen.” One doctor asked for a Salvation Army contact in Moscow, which he was given.

Teen moms go green at White Shield
Thanks to a generous donation from the Anne A. Berni Foundation, two new gardens grace the landscape at The Salvation Army White Shield Center for teenage girls in Portland, Ore. The gardens—one for vegetables and one full of flowers—will be maintained by the girls themselves, with volunteer assistance from a local master gardener, and will become part of their curriculum requirements through Portland Public Schools.
The center provides residential treatment for teen moms and their babies; the girls get an education, parenting skills, and a new direction in life.

Happy 100, Brigadier!
Brigadier Alta Kelso recently celebrated her 100th birthday, reports Major Joyce Stevenson, retired officers’ director. “At her birthday party, she received a birthday card from President George W. Bush. That same evening the Riverside/Perris ARC gave her a birthday party; she was also honored at the Murietta Corps and a new yearly ‘Heralds of Hope’ award was named in her honor.” Daughters Major Dorothy Covert and Janet Celetano joined in the celebrations.

Congratulations to Larson
Captain Tammy Larson, Fresno corps officer, recently received a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Ministries at Fresno Pacific University.

Congress Hall Confusion
We evidently have some sharp-eyed readers….a number of you contacted us in regard to the photo caption for the “Congress Hall Combo” (New Frontier June 19, 2004). We mistakenly identified Geoff Crusberg as Jim Paton. Our apologies! (We were correct in identifying Lt. Colonel Gene Rice at the piano…)
