A surprise awaited kettle workers at The Salvation Army in Salem, Ore., as they emptied the money from one of the red kettles.

Rolling out of the Salem Corps’ kettle was a note–folded up and taped together with something inside it. Major Jerry Ames, Marion/Polk County coordinator, took the small package, carefully removed the tape and unfolded it.

The note–written on a piece of Christmas paper–simply read: “Please use this to share God’s love. It is appraised at $500-600. It is all I have to give.”

Accompanying the message was a half-carat, white gold engagement ring.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the anonymous giver, believing whatever the circumstances, this person will be blessed,” Ames said.
