Promoted to glory

Henk Jouvenaar was promoted to Glory February 9 in Long Beach, California.

He was born January 18, 1935 to Salvation Army officer parents, Brigadier and Mrs. George Jouvenaar, in Deventer, the Netherlands. In the early 1950s they were appointed to the town of Dordrecht, where Henk met his future wife, Tonny van de Klashorst. A quiet person, Henk was a faithful soldier who served the Lord through and with his music.

A long-time band member, Henk played in the Amsterdam Staff Band for many years. The band toured the U.S. in 1959, and in 1961 Henk, with Tonny and daughter Elsje, came to the Long Beach Temple Corps to be the bandmaster. He played several instruments and composed and arranged many songs.

Many people will remember how beautifully he played the organ at the corps and at the Long Beach Adult Rehabilitation Center.

In 1969 Henk and Tonny started their own printing business, Williams Printing in Bellflower. They worked together and were later joined in the shop by their son, Hendrik.

Henk is survived by his wife Tonny, daughter Elsje (husband John), daughter Mary (husband Troy), and son Hendrik, and five grandchildren.
