Choir performs to packed house at Portland Moore Street Corps.

The African Children’s Choir

Recently, the Portland Moore Street Corps was host to the internationally acclaimed African Children’s Choir, who presented a concert at the corps gymnasium to a full house of nearly 500 persons. Corps officers are Captains Robert and Donna Marshall.

The choir is made up of 26 children, ages 7-11, who are selected from the most needy in Africa. Accompanied by drums and ethnic instruments, they performed a variety of songs, including well-loved children’s songs, gospel melodies and spirituals. Since its inception in 1984, the choir has appeared in over 3,500 concerts.

The choir stayed for two days after the concert; they attended school and in the evening enjoyed dinner and fellowship with members of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School choir where Moore Street soldier Tim Kennedy is a teacher. The African Children’s Choir also spent an evening with the youth of Moore Street—the YAMS. Cascade divisional leaders Majors Robert and Mariam Rudd shared in the devotion and prayer time of the choir members.

Captains Marshall sum up the event: “The blessings were many! Salvationists attended from as far away as Eugene, Oregon and Tacoma, Wash., as well as many people from the community. The military provided a special stage for the concert and a manager of a luxury hotel provided rooms to house the entire choir and their chaperones, along with complimentary breakfasts. We are pleased to say that the hotel manager is now a member of the Moore Street advisory council!”
