Hawaii’s Kaneohe Corps grows by five

Corps officer recounts recent growth.

by Marcey Hoffschneider, Captain –

This is where it all began for five eager people wanting to join the Kaneohe Corps: “We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by the inspiration of God and that they only constitute the divine rule of Christian faith and practice.”

Those words, “We believe,” became more personal to my heart when I said, “I believe.” When I arrived in Kaneohe over a year ago, there were only a handful of people at the corps. I felt like Moses in the wilderness not knowing what to do—only that I should follow the Lord. I thought, “Lord, the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.”

God was teaching me to believe in him! I prayed every night for help and, one by one, month by month, God started to lead people to the corps. Today, five new members are in leadership—with Paul as the praise and worship leader, Ethel as the corps treasurer, Judith as the corps social service coordinator, Maka as an employee of ATS, and Birdie, whose ministry is in the kitchen.

I am reminded of the story of Thomas doubting the other disciples for talking to Jesus as he appeared to them. Thomas did not believe their story and wanted to see Jesus for himself; Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” (John 20:27)

These new “on fire” soldiers for the Lord do believe in Jesus Christ and believe that God is calling them into life- long ministry with The Salvation Army.
