Songs in the Night, which appeared as a popular series in The War Cry over a period of several years, is now in book form. Colonel Henry Gariepy (R), in his 16th book, presents the inspiring stories behind 100 hymns that were born in the night seasons of sorrow and trial.

Selections include such cherished hymns as It Is Well With My Soul, He Giveth More Grace, To God Be the Glory, O Love That Will Not Let Me Go, Amazing Grace, and Great is Thy Faithfulness. From the devotional treasury of Salvation Army songs are included some of the late General Albert Orsborn’s lyrics such as My Life Must Be Christ’s Broken Bread, and Commissioner Stanley Ditmer’s I’m In His Hands.

The 100 hymns are helpfully divided into 13 sections, including “Songs of Faith,” Songs of Prayer,” “Songs of the Cross,” “Songs of Devotion,” “Songs of Praise,” and “Songs from History.”

Knowing the circumstances in which they were written will make these cherished hymns all the more of a blessing and meaningful. This devotional study assures the reader that God is the great Composer of the songs in the night seasons of our soul. When darkness overtakes us, as Job and the Psalmist affirmed long ago: “God gives a song in the night.”

This attractive hardback cover book is published by the Christian publisher, Eerdmans, and will be available in Christian book stores as well as at Salvation Army Trade stores.
