Portland Tab honors McHarg
The recently acquired Allen organ was dedicated at the Portland, Ore., Tabernacle Corps to the “glory of God” and the memory of Lt. Colonel William McHarg, who was promoted to Glory in 2003. McHarg was the corps organist for many years as well as the bandmaster and solo cornetist.

Lt. Colonel Jean McHarg, David McHarg, and Colonel Edward Fritz participated in the dedication ceremony; CSM Michael McVicker played “The Reason,” a favorite tune of McHarg’s, as a cornet solo accompanied by Major Shirley Goode on the Allen organ.

Denver Red Shield enrolls 13
In keeping with its “One Thing Goal” of evangelizing the community it serves, the Denver Red Shield recently enrolled 13 new senior soldiers. Congratulations to: John Thomason, James Andrews, Gerald Abshire, Ira Fosdick, Michael Listerud, Tiberiys Summers, George Lopez, Pete Clevenger, Ronald Neal, Suzanne Andrews, Glen Mansfield, Boyd Hardaway, and Herbert Thomas.

“Since December 2003, 25 senior soldiers, six junior soldiers, and twelve adherents have been enrolled at the Red Shield Corps,” reports Envoy Ron McKinney.

Army programs change lives
Lt. Col. Alfred Van Cleef, Southern Calif. divisional commander, recently spoke at the graduation ceremony of five high school students from Booth High School. “What a joy to see what God is doing,” he stated. “One graduate’s mother came to the Army’s Safe Harbor program from Skid Row, graduated to the Westwood Transitional Village, and is now completing studies to be a certified drug and alcohol counselor.”

Artist honored
Lt. Nigel Cross, Santa Barbara, Calif., corps officer and Hospitality House director, reports that staff member Patrick Heleen recently won an art competition held in Santa Barbara County. The theme was poverty, and Heleen attained an honorable mention for a 3D representation of his painted art, and went on to win the competition with his main entry, a painting depicting the homeless in Santa Barbara. “He is extremely talented and now is making a name for himself,” said Cross. “We are so proud of him.”

SAN PEDRO Temple ON THE GROW
Reports are in from the San Pedro Temple, Calif., corps on the exciting growth taking place. This spring, 19 soldiers were enrolled and 60 people received certificates of appreciation. The Home League is growing as it develops new arts and crafts programs, and members participate in the Women’s Choir. Youth are actively involved in the Worship Group, and providing a ministry in music to the corps.

NRB slated February 2005
The Salvation Army will participate in the National Religious Broadcasters 62nd Annual Convention & Exposition February 11-15, 2005 in Anaheim, Calif. The annual NRB Convention is the world’s largest nationally and internationally recognized event dedicated solely to assist those in the field of Christian communications. For five days, over 6,000 broadcasting professionals from more than 30 countries participate in a full schedule of daily general sessions, all-day Boot Camps, high-impact and topical seminars.
