We are pleased to announce actor Jack Lemmon will host the Salvation Army’s 1996 “Army of Stars” Christmas program and gift recording. Jack has been a long-time, warm friend of the Army, and his voice will make a meaningful contribution to our message. Singer Steven Curtis Chapman and actor Kellie Martin are also featured on this year’s program, along with General Paul A. Rader and Mrs. General Kay F. Rader. It is anticipated that this program will be aired on more than one thousand radio stations throughout the United States.

ANNUAL REPORT CONTEST

“There’s No Place Like Home” is the theme of the San Francisco City Annual Report. This fine publication, a winner in the Army’s National Annual Report Contest, conveys the Army’s exciting and multi-faceted ministry featuring the Harbor Light Corps, Gateway Transitional Housing, Adult Rehabilitation Center, Pinehurst Lodge, Turk Street Corps, Bridgeway Hotel, and Life Boat Shelter. Congratulations to those involved in the production of this outstanding communication tool.

NEW SOUP KITCHEN

A beautiful and well-furbished soup kitchen was opened in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley, Ida., supported by the Community Action Agency, and generous donations from the community. This modern and functional kitchen was made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. An open house was held for potential volunteers and the citizens of Nez Perce and Asotin Counties. Congratulations on this much-needed addition to services for those in need!

PICNIC COMES OF AGE

Held continuously for the past 21 years, an Annual Picnic for Seniors in San Francisco took place recently. More than 2,000 seniors attended this wonderful event under sunny skies. Divisional Commander Major Jerry W. Gaines, along with San Francisco Giants Orlando Cepeda and Vida Blue, presented prizes for a variety of interesting “When I was 21” contest winners. Mrs. Evelyn Dexter and her staff are to be commended for organizing this longest such event in the Army world.

KURDISH RELIEF UNDER WAY

Captain Art Storey, territorial emergency/disaster coordinator, recently returned from Guam after checking Salvation Army operations in what the military is calling, “Operation Pacific Haven.” About 2,500 Kurds who worked for U.S. aid groups in northern Iraq have been moved to Guam and are now at Andersen South housing area before their transition to the mainland U.S.

Guam corps officers Captains Dave and Linda Harmon, Steve Walker, staff and volunteers met the Kurds on arrival with toys for the children and items for infant needs. Envoy Tim DeCastro from Honolulu is also there to assist them. The public’s help is requested in light of the ongoing need for consumable items for the refugees during their stay on Guam. Monetary donations marked “Kurdish Relief” are greatly appreciated and may be sent to any local Salvation Army unit.

UNSUNG HERO

The Westwood Transitional Village (WTV) in Los Angeles is being highlighted in an NBC-TV news segment called “Unsung Heroes.” Each week, WTV receives produce that is left over from vendors at the famous Farmers’ Market. This generous donation is coordinated by a program called “Extra Helpings” and the director, Bruce Rosen, is featured picking up the donations and delivering them to WTV clients at the trailers.
