Anacortes Corps thanks ‘partners’

The Anacortes Corps, Wash., recognized service to the community at its annual civic dinner. A host of individuals and organizations who partnered with the Army were honored.

“By joining hands and working with other organizations, we accomplish more,” said Corps Officer Captain Michael Paugh.

“Volunteer of the Year” awards went to Emily Dickman and Doris Benson. “You go far beyond the call of duty,” Paugh told them, noting the pair took money from their own pockets to buy turkeys for Christmas baskets.

Community Involvement Awards were presented to groups and individuals who worked to make Anacortes a better place.

Anacortes High School’s Key Club was honored for the many community service projects it has completed this year and during its 70-year history. According to Paugh, the students performed 2,200 hours of volunteer work this year alone.

Also honored were: the Lions Club, for conducting a holiday food drive for the Army’s food bank; the Anacortes Police Department for its annual contribution of bicycles for distribution at Christmas, as well as “for keeping this community one of the safest places to raise a family”; and the Anacortes School District for helping to start the new after school program and teen center which meets at the corps.

Bell Ringers awards went to the Noon Kiwanis Club, Soroptimist International of Anacortes and the Anacortes Rotary Club.
