DR. OLAF TEGNER 1918-2005

The Salvation Army and Pepperdine University bade a warm farewell with the “promotion to Glory” of Dr. Oly Tegner, described in a memorial service tribute by Southern California Divisional Commander Major Paul Seiler, as a “son of the regiment.”

As Army Brigadiers, Tegner’s parents were historic leaders of the Army’s Swedish work in the West and he had been active growing up in youth work and bands. In later years he served for over 18 years on the Los Angeles Metropolitan Advisory Board and more recently on the Crestmont Advisory Council.

He was an avid supporter of the Museum of the West, serving on the Museum committee. Crestmont College honored him with the Others award in 2002, recognizing his distinguished service to the community.

Tegner loved Army bands, never missed a concert, and took great pride in his long and loving association with the Army.

He entered Pepperdine College in the second year of its existence and, in many ways, never left. He worked with all eight presidents of the University in various capacities at the University, as a faculty member in the School of Education, service as its dean, and as a Vice President for educational relations. He played an important role in the re-location of the University’s campus from southwest Los Angeles to Malibu 20 year ago.

Pepperdine has named a one million dollar scholarship endowment in his honor, the Olaf H. Tegner Scholarship Fund for aspiring teachers and an annual award for extraordinary work as a volunteer.

Drawing from his Army roots, Oly had a special place in his heart for the poor, the destitute and the disenfranchised.

He is survived by his wife, Allie, his daughter and son-in-law Lars and Christer Palsson and their four children. Oly and Allie’s daughter, Mia, preceded Oly in death.

The Tegner family has asked that in lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Olaf H. Tegner Endowed Scholarship Fund.

Condolences to Mrs. Allie Tegner may be sent to: 2714 Coral Ridge Road, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275.
