Army receives disaster response grant
The Metro Denver Salvation Army was one of four agencies to receive a portion of a $1 million combined grant from the Gates Family Foundation, the Boettcher Foundation, the Coors Foundation, and the Daniels Fund. The grant was given in the wake of Colorado’s response to Hurricane Katrina and the money will go to build infrastructure within: The Salvation Army, The American Red Cross Mile High Chapter, Catholic Charities, and the Mile High United Way.
Territorial Commander Commissioner Philip Swyers spoke on the steps of the Colorado State Capitol, where he thanked the people of Colorado and the collaborating agencies. The Metro Denver Salvation Army will purchase a mobile canteen kitchen, kitchen equipment, a truck, a supply trailer, and equipment and supplies for the supply trailer with their share of the funds.
Travel in “footsteps of Paul”
This 14-day study tour (February 13-26, 2007) will trace Paul’s missionary journeys through Athens, Corinth, Thessalonica, Philippi, Ephesus and other early Christian sites in Greece and Turkey. The cost is $3,453 and includes airfare; airport taxes; accommodations (four star hotels); daily meals; private motor coach with English-speaking guide; Turkish visa; gratuities and hotel services/charges.

Loveless presents piano
to Tucson Temple
In memory of her late husband Bandmaster Eric Loveless, Joan Loveless presented a new piano to Major Peter Clack for the Tucson Temple Corps. Joan played Eric’s favorite piece of music, “Ascalon,” at the presentation, followed by Captain Kimberly Jo and her son Thomas, who played a piano/euphonium duet written by Eric. Thomas was awarded the Eric Loveless Award at Ponderosa Camp this summer.
Ketchikan Gateway takes top spot
The second annual Salvation Army Bowling Association league closed with the Ketchikan Gateway Corps, Alaska, finishing on top. This year, 50 teams participated—ten more than last year. Many corps found this was a fun (and unique) ministry opportunity to reach new families and welcome them into the corps fellowship.
Mobile kitchen has baptism by fire
The Sierra Del Mar Division’s new 18-foot emergency disaster mobile kitchen, donated by Dick and Beverly Davis, was quickly put into service when a call came to assist at two fires in the Millard and Sawtooth, Calif., areas. Seventy-four families received assistance, including housing, meals and supplies.
McHarg leads retired officers in Cascade
Lt. Colonel Jean McHarg was introduced as the new president of the Cascade Retired Officers’ League at a luncheon at Camp Kuratli. Major Mariam Rudd, Cascade divisional retired officers representative, presented the newly elected/appointed officers including Vice President Major Tom Elliott, Secretary/Treasurer Major Olga Vilen, Chaplain Major Millie Lum, and Editor, Colonel Edward Fritz.
