The contemporary atmosphere at the Monterey Peninsula Corps, Calif., is alive with the spirit of Easter Week. Captains Henry and Bernadine Graciani report that Colonels Bill and Gwen Luttrell and Lt. Colonels Jerry and Jeanine Gaines will be present as special guests.

On Good Friday evening, the drama team will present a modern day version of the trial of Jesus Christ. There will be a vivid representation as Jesus is accused of treason. Witnesses will tell the people that he was going to “overthrow” the government and establish a new one. The audience will also hear testimonies of other witnesses and their experiences with the defendant, Jesus Christ, as it is drawn up into the impact of the false accusations and the outcome of the trial.

The courtroom drama reaches its high point when Jesus is found guilty as charged and sentenced to death. One of the play’s important aspects is that many witnesses often contradict each other, leading to doubt over the credibility of the testimony. The jury nevertheless convicts.

“This play has a serious message and when people see it they will come to realize the importance of the trial in their own lives,” Creative Ministries Director Ramon Ocano said.

By bringing the story of the trial up to date, Ocano hopes the play will force people to see how Jesus was unfairly judged and condemned, and then to look at their own lives and how they might judge others in the same way.

Following the Easter Sunrise service, the Men’s Fellowship will provide breakfast for the many members and guests expected.

The Easter service at 9:30 a.m. with participation by the special guests, will feature the creative ministries group, young people whose “Gospel Rhythm” employs guitar, keyboards and drums, accompanied by flags, ribbons and timbrels.
