Soldier Promoted to Glory

Marvin Swan–of the San Bernardino Corps, Calif., was recently promoted to Glory. Marvin taught at San Bernardino High School for 32 years. He faithfully served both at the corps and the Adult Rehabilitation Center for 40 years, volunteering his time and talent in every imaginable way. He is survived by his wife, Betty, a son and two daughters.

Mary Louise Downs, 85, was recently promoted to Glory from Palm Desert, Calif., where she was active in the Women’s Auxiliary at the San Bernardino Corps. Mary was well known for her love of The Salvation Army and her desire to help “Others.” She recently received a 40 year certificate for her faithful work in League of Mercy and the Veterans Hospital. Mary is survived by a sister and two nieces.

Howard Lester Sparks was recently promoted to Glory from his home at the age of 71. Les served as an officer for 25 years in corps and at Adult Rehabilitation Centers. In later years he managed apartment complexes with his wife, Betty. He is survived by his wife and children, Fred Sparks, Stephen Sparks, Susan Green, Diana Sparks, and his stepson, Scott Evenson. His daughters, Marianne Sparks Coates and Leslie Sparks, predeceased him. He is also survived by brothers, Arthur and Harry.
