Expectations were high as delegates gathered at the Long Beach Temple Corps for the first Latino Music Institute. The event was ably prepared and facilitated by Captain Mario Reyes, (divisional Latino coordinator), and Lt. Oscar Tippol, corps commanding officer.

A nine-hour institute of instruction, praise and worship, fellowship and prayer culminated in an excellent expression of power and glory to our God through various musical forms.

In his keynote address, Divisional Commander Lt. Col. Alfred R. Van Cleef set the scene for the day, indicating that all “our” music must be undertaken with God’s Word as its foundation. Divisional Music Director Chris Mallett encouraged participants to give their “best for the Highest,” in all expressions of music making. To begin, qualified instructors gave the groundwork in theory. Choral instruction, basic guitar, percussion and sound production followed. In addition, there was a valuable Bible study and an important discussion of “orders and regulations” pertaining to Salvation Army music making.

The enthusiasm was infectious, with many corps worship bands sharing their talents with a fine offering of worship through music. Delegates thrilled to vocal solos and a saxophonist’s excellent love offering to God. Rousing, joyous, pulsating singing by the large crowd attending the praise service highlighted the day. Maria Salazar (LA Central) summed up the event, which successfully met its aim, in saying, “This was a great beginning in the education (and continued fellowship), of Latinos in unity of praise and worship through music making. When is the next one being held?”

Un instituto de nueve horas de instrucción educativa, alabanza y adoración, compañerismo y oración, culminó en una expresión excelente de poder y gloria a nuestro Dios, por medio de varias formas musicales. Los delegados se reunieron en el Cuerpo de Long Beach con grandes expectativas para el primer Instituto Latino de Música, hábilmente preparado y facilitado por el Capitán Mario Reyes, (Coordinador Latino Divisional), y el Teniente Oscar Tippol (Oficial del Cuerpo del Templo de Long Beach).

En su discurso de apertura, el Tte. Coronel Alfred R. Van Cleef, marcó el tono para el día, indicando que toda ‘nuestra’ música se debe llevar a cabo con la Palabra de Dios como su fundamento. El Director de Música Divisional, Chris Mallet, expresó sentimientos que animaron a los participantes a dar su ‘mejor para el Altísimo,’ en todas las expresiones de música…y para comenzar, instructores calificados impartieron rudimentos teóricos. Seguidamente hubo talleres de instrucción coral, guitarra básica, percusión y producción de sonido, además de un valioso estudio Bíblico y entendimiento importante de ‘órdenes y regulaciones,’ con relación a la música en el Ejército de Salvación.

El entusiasmo de los participantes era contagioso, con muchas bandas de adoración de los cuerpos queriendo compartir sus talentos. Pudieron hacer esto con una gran ofrenda de adoración por medio de la música. Solos vocales, una ofrenda de amor a Dios por un saxofonista excelente, y el cantar gozoso, animado, conmovedor de la gran congregación que asistió al servicio de alabanza fueron momentos destacados del día. María Salazar, (L.A. Central), resumió el evento, que con éxito logró su meta, al decir, “Este fue un gran comienzo en la educación (y compañerismo) de Latinos en unidad de alabanza y adoración por medio de la música. ¿Cuándo será el próximo?”
