Nearly 700 people recently attended National Night Out at The Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in San Diego. It’s the first time The Salvation Army has partnered in this event, which includes Target, Crime Stoppers, and the Police-Community Partnerships.

“This is what keeps crime away,” said San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne. “People—young and old—gathering outdoors, having fun. No criminal wants to be around.”

This year marks the 25th anniversary of this event, which is designed to heighten prevention of crime and drug abuse as well as strengthen police and community partnerships. Over 24 community organizations participated with booths, and six television news stations covered the event.

The evening’s focus was part awareness and part entertainment. Kids enjoyed face painting and free prizes, along with seeing the police K-9 and mounted units. Adults learned more about community resources, including free mental health screenings, Neighborhood Watch and jobs in the police community.

Kroc Center groups provided entertainment. Ballerinas performed. Kroc Kids sang musical numbers from Seussical, the Musical. The break dance group caught everyone’s attention with their moves.

“We’re thrilled to partner in this significant event,” said Captain John Van Cleef, Kroc Center administrator. “We’ve seen first-hand how the Kroc Center has helped change this neighborhood. Events like these help reinforce our desire to be part of the overall health of this area.”
