Salvation Army responds to Clayton Fire

ClaytonFire2The Salvation Army continue to serve first responders and evacuees of the‪ Clayton Fire‬ in Lake County, Calif., as more than 1,500 residents remain evacuated.

Roughly 2,500 Clearlake-area residents were allowed home Tuesday, as firefighters increased containment to 40 percent.

Teams from Auburn, Napa, Roseville and Solano County have already served over 500 meals in Lakeport, Middletown and Clearlake. Salvation Army personnel have also offered spiritual and emotional care to more than 125 individuals.

According to fire officials, the fire was deliberate, erupting Saturday evening south of Lower Lake. By Monday morning nearly 4,000 acres and 175 structures had burned. Gov. Jerry Brown subsequently issued an emergency proclamation.

A Clearlake man suspected of starting this fire and several others in the area has been in custody since Monday afternoon. Damin Pashilk, 40, worked as an inmate firefighter while serving time for drug and weapons charges years ago, authorities said.

Salvation Army staff will continue to assess the situation to see if additional services will be needed in other areas of Lake County.
