The UpBeat Committee in Kalispell, Mont. recently awarded the Hand to Man Award to Ruth Case, whose compelling story of a selfless act of kindness, and courage, prompted a standing ovation from the large crowd on hand at the presentation.

This award is presented annually to a person who performs some extraordinary act of kindness or an organization that contributes to the community in some significant way. By recognizing the recipients, the committee hopes that their examples will serve as a model encouraging others to “go and do likewise.”

While working at a local drug store, Ruth overheard a customer telling of her urgent need for a kidney donor. Ruth told the stranger: “I have two and you can have one if you like.” Her remark was met with disbelief; however, after a short time, medical approval was given and Ruth risked surgery to save the life of a complete stranger.

Ruth was presented a sculpture recognition award called “A Cup in His Name” during Kalispell’s third annual An Evening On the UpBeat 2003.

Planned and sponsored by a citizens committee, this evening of entertainment annually pays tribute to The Salvation Army in the Flathead Valley. Many area businesses contributed to make the evening a success. While not a fundraiser, the UpBeat event is designed to raise public awareness of the many ministries of The Salvation Army and in doing so, increase the financial and volunteer support from the community.
