Janice Buchanan finishes the fight

Lt. Colonel Janice Buchanan was unexpectedly promoted to Glory on April 4 from her home in Fontana, Calif.

Janice Olivia Burr was born June 10, 1938 to William and Alice Burr. Though as a baby she had been dedicated to God in The Salvation Army, she was nearly 12 years old before a friend invited her to the San Francisco Mission Street Corps. Here she witnessed faithful officers and soldiers and learned to stand firm in the love of God.

Responding to God’s call to full-time ministry as an officer, Janice entered training and was commissioned in 1959 with the Pioneer Session. Her first appointment was as assistant at the Caldwell, Idaho Corps.

In 1962 Janice was appointed to the School for Officer Training (SFOT), where she met Cadet Chris Buchanan. The couple married in 1965 and began their ministry together as corps officers of the San Luis Obispo Corps. They also served at the Compton, Inglewood and Pasadena Tabernacle Corps in Calif.

Janice served in several divisional and territorial appointments, including: field training office at SFOT, divisional Guard and Sunbeam director, and director of women’s organizations for the Hawaiian and Pacific Islands Division and the Northwest Division. As a team, she and Chris built a reputation of being a dynamic and energetic couple.

Following her husband’s promotion to Glory on April 4, 2000, Janice was asked to take two post-retirement appointments: territorial missions secretary in 2000 and assistant secretary for women’s ministries in 2003. Throughout her life, she sought understanding and knowledge, and was only a few months short of completing a degree program at Azusa Pacific University.

She is survived by her two children: Chad Buchanan, who resides with his wife, Joyce and children, Cian and Mason, in Hauula, Hawaii, and Stacie Buchanan Brown, who resides with her husband, Richard, in Monrovia, Calif.

A celebration of life service was held at the Pasadena Tabernacle Corps with corps officer Captain Edward Hill officiating and Commissioners Joe and Doris Noland bringing the message. The committal service took place at the Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, Calif.
