Pomona, Calif., corps inaugurates brass band

It has been more than 15 years since The Salvation Army Pomona Corps has had a band; however, a new era has begun. During their first performance on Sunday morning, March 14, the band played a prelude (“Falcon Street”), a closing hymn (“The Doxology”), and a postlude (“Diademata”).

Band members are: Ryan Brown and Debbie Dailey, first cornet; Claudia Sparrow and Carrie Sparrow, second cornet; Alexandria Sparrow, alto horn; Donald Wambolt, B-flat tuba; Luke Verseput, baritone; Bandmaster Roland Furman, trombone. Furman plans to add a second alto horn and another tuba in the near future.

In preparation, a certified instrument repair technician refurbished 22 instruments. Individuals then received instrument assignments and spent five weeks in intense rehearsals.

The band is presently practicing for the kick-off of the corps camping program in June. Plans are also being formulated for a fundraising concert in September and a Christmas program.
