Nampa Helps Send Kids to Band Camp

Band students from Homedale, Idaho, recently spent five days at Camp Kuratli at Trestle Glen near Portland, Ore., where they rehearsed concert literature and developed marching skills.

Captain James Sullivan of the Nampa Corps presented Barbie Vander Boegh, band booster president, with a check for $8,000 for the 65 members of the eighth through twelfth grade bands to attend a special camp over Memorial Day weekend.

The generous donation paid the costs of the camp not covered by fundraising and $100 per student. It also allowed some students to attend by scholarship. Another generous donation covering transportation to and from the camp was made by the Homedale School District. Arnold Pierce, music director at Homedale High School, accompanied the students. Pierce is also bandmaster at the Boise Corps.

Sullivan had the opportunity to meet with the students and parents at their spring concert. “Economically speaking, Homedale is in a depressed area. Without support from The Salvation Army, many of these kids would simply not be able to attend,” he stated. “The students and parents were very excited about the camp experience.”

The trip included fun activities as well. Students were able to enjoy swimming, roasting wieners in the mountains, visiting Cannon Beach, shopping at Clackamas Mall, working out at a fully equipped gymnasium, and visiting Astoria.
