Larsen to lead Uganda relief team

Jerry Larsen, Salvation Army emergency disaster services director for central Indiana, has been asked by The Salvation Army’s International Headquarters in London, England, to lead a special relief team to war-torn Uganda. Larsen’s team will be responsible for bringing aid to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), those who have had to leave their homes during the 20 years of civil war that has plagued the country.

The Salvation Army has been working with the United Nations and Uganda government to help bring aid to people in need, but Larsen’s team is the first Salvation Army relief team of its kind to go to Uganda. Now, with a cease fire between the Uganda government and the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army, many people are returning to what little is left of their villages. Larsen’s team will help rebuild villages and oversee projects such as the construction of water harvesting units, shelters and community buildings, and establishing and building schools. In addition, the team will work to address sanitation issues.
