The Army breaks ground in a new affordable housing project.

In March The Salvation Army in Las Vegas, Nev., broke ground on the new “Horizon Crest” affordable housing project.

The land was purchased from the City of Las Vegas for a total of $10 and will be the foundation for 78 units of one to three bedroom apartments whose residents will be eligible for tenancy based on 40 to 60 percent of area median income.

Working in conjunction with the city, the state of Nevada, organizations like HUD and HAND, an energetic board and community support under the direction of Major William Raihl, The Salvation Army is working to address the city’s serious housing issue as 5,000 new residents arrive each month, while available and affordable housing continues to diminish.

This new complex will provide a continuum of care from street homelessness, emergency sheltering, vocational training and transitional housing. In addition, the project will offer case management and be located in close proximity to the main service campus of The Salvation Army in downtown Las Vegas.
