The Salvation Army’s emergency disaster services team deployed to provide meals and hydration to first responders following a fire today at the Martin Drake Power Plant in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Just a few blocks away, The Salvation Army’s R.J. Montgomery Center—Colorado Springs’ only round-the-clock emergency shelter—houses an average of 187 men, women and children each night. Staff worked quickly to evacuate employees and residents following the outbreak of the fire.
Sherry Manson, service extension and emergency disaster services director in the Intermountain Division, said the center was closed for four hours today but is now open. The on-site canteen, under the leadership of Fountain Valley Corps Officer Lt. Jeff Williams, will continue service until roughly 9 p.m. (MST).
