At the request of the Office of Emergency Management, a Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team from El Paso County (Colorado) has deployed a mobile feeding unit to help provide food and hydration services to the first responders and evacuees of the 416 Fire in Durango and La Plata County, located in southwestern Colorado. The first feeding will take place June 14, around 6.00 p.m., at Escalante Middle School in Durango. The team is also available for spiritual care.
This first team of responders is expected to remain on the ground through the weekend. The crew will be equipped to provide meals, snacks and hydration to the approximately 100 individuals currently evacuated. Clean up kits will also be distributed to those in need. The Salvation Army will remain on standby and continue service if firefighting efforts continue into the coming weeks.
The 416 Fire burning in southwestern Colorado continues to grow more than a week after it was first reported. The blaze has burned 23,378 acres as more than 900 firefighters work to battle it back. As of June 13, it was 15 percent contained.
EDS is one of the many services provided by The Salvation Army. In an emergency, The Salvation Army’s first goal is to meet the basic needs of first responders and those affected by the emergency. The second goal is to assist with the recovery, which can last for years.
