Major Patricia Anne Boyd was promoted to Glory Sept. 21 from her home in Sun City, Calif.
Patricia Anne Phillips was born July 13, 1937, to John and Jessie Phillips in Sacramento, Calif., where she joined older sister, Evalyn.
Phillips answered the call to serve as a Salvation Army officer—the third generation officer in her family—and was commissioned in 1956 with the Sword Bearers Session. Her first appointment was to the Glendale (Calif.) Corps, where she met future husband, David Boyd. They celebrated 59 years of marriage this year.
As corps officers, the Boyds served in Taft, Calif., Vallejo, Watsonville and Santa Rosa, Calif., Missoula, Mont., Bellingham, Wash., and Redondo Beach, Calif. In 1974, they were appointed as trainees in Oakland, Calif., at the Men’s Social, now called the Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC).
Their ARC appointments included Anchorage, Alaska, Denver, and Bakersfield, San Bernardino, San Francisco, Anaheim, San Jose and Oakland, Calif. After retirement, they served as administrators at the Riverside, San Diego and Santa Monica centers.
Boyd is remembered for her warmth and encouragement to the men and women entering the ARC. Her greatest desire was to see them find healing and new life through a relationship with Jesus.
A gifted pianist, she played at the corps until a few months ago, when illness made it impossible. She also played baritone, alto horn and the accordion, and sang soprano.
Boyd is survived by her husband, Major David Boyd, and children, Major Jim (Cathi) Boyd, Julie (Stefan) Matthews, Jeremy (Sharlena) Boyd and Jason Boyd; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life service was held at the Riverside (Perris) ARC Sept. 24, officiated by grandsons, Captain Joshua Boyd and Captain Joel Boyd.
