1,200 enjoy Denver Red Shield Easter weekend events

Easter weekend was filled with dancing, a basketball tournament, community outreach, and worship.


The Denver Red Shield Corps, led by Envoys Ron and Roberta McKinney, celebrated Easter with the enrollment of 15 senior soldiers, three junior soldiers and one adherent. Major Linda Manhardt, divisional secretary for program, officiated at the ceremony, which was the culmination of a weekend of community outreach and praise to the risen Lord.

New senior soldiers are Kayla Sturgeon, Sellah Kyambalesa, Shanita Lewis, Ronald Greene, Leonard Wentz, Eric Fitch, Fred Navarro, Greg Bristow, Stacy Smith, Deborah Miller, Maggie Lopez, Cherie Harris, Phillip Smith, Tom Alexander and Jeffrey Martyn; the new adherent is Sandi Dittman; and new junior soldiers are Lisa Bingham, Tabitha Graves and Anthony Harris.

The enrollment is a reflection of the Red Shield’s vibrant and varied ministries, which bring many people from the community to The Salvation Army. More than 1,200 came to Easter Saturday activities. Reflects McKinney, “We give God all the glory for Red Shield and Red Shield Temple’s ministry.”

Saturday was busy—the day began with the Donnie Wilson Memorial Basketball Tournament, in honor of the Red Shield Advisory Council Chairman who was recently promoted to Glory. Before the games began, several of the children and parents offered prayers for the community. The girls narrowly lost their championship game to Highland Ranch and the boys won theirs against Prince Hall.

Meanwhile, the Red Shield Temple hosted a “Sisters of Color” Hispanic Health Fair, where more than 150 Hispanic neighbors of the corps received free eye, blood pressure, foot and diabetes health information. The fair featured a performance by the ethnic dance group No Mo Violence.

In the afternoon, the Red Shield Tang Soo Do class began testing its 65 members for their upcoming belt promotion. In September, the Red Shield will host its first Tang Soo Do tournament. Grand Master and Senior Solder Karen Herdman teaches the class weekly.

The canteen sold refreshments, raising over $600 for the Red Shield’s self-denial goal.
