Captain Christine Giffey-Brohaugh, Renton, Wash., corps officer, was recently featured in the Renton Reporter as one of the top individuals to watch in the community. Congatulations!

The Bend Bulletin, Ore., highlighted the work of Bend Corps Officers Captains John and Sabrina Tumey, noting the Army’s role as “a strong contender in the battle against poverty” in that Central Oregon community.

Well done
Major Mario Reyes, Southern California divisional secretary for Latino Program, was recently awarded a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Phoenix.

Coats for kids
Captain Raymond Erickson-King, Mid-Columbia (Tri-cities) Wash., corps officer, reports that 15-year-old Adam Salazar, a Southridge High School sophomore, went door-to-door and collected 122 coats for the 18th annual Coats for Kids Drive.

In all, more than 1,900 coats were collected; The Salvation Army visited neighborhoods in January to pass out the coats.

Tsunami relief continues
Around the territory, Salvationists and friends have gathered support for victims of the tsunami in South East Asia. A few of the fundraising efforts:

Pasadena Tabernacle Corps, Calif.: “Our Sunday school and Early Childhood Education departments, under the leadership of Laura Henry-John and Kendra Holly, are excited about holding a variety of fundraisers, from dessert sales during our Sunday lunches to car washes,” reports Corps Officer Shelley Hill. In addition, the Pasadena Kiwanis Club presented Captains Dusty and Shelley Hill with a check for $1,600 for this relief effort.

Del Oro DHQ: “Julgrans Plundring,” meaning to “strip the Christmas tree,” is an old Scandinavian tradition. Recently, the employees and officers of the Del Oro DHQ held their second annual Julgrans Plundring to raise funds for the tsunami disaster relief. Major Eda Hokom, divisional commander, and Sarah Bentley, director of program ministries, presented a program about Del Oro’s Partner In Mission, India South Eastern Territory.

They then challenged the group to support the relief effort. Major Candi Frizzell acted as auctioneer of gifts people had brought for the event; over $2,500 was contributed to the disaster relief.

Los Angeles Central Corps: Captain Antonio Horta, corps officer, reports that the LA Central Corps, in partnership with Radio Zion 1580 AM, hosted a special concert to benefit victims of the tsunami. Musical artists included: Manuel Gaytan y su Grupo Sangre y Fuego, Erick Porta, Llamada Final Los Angeles, and Belkis Deyanira.
