New gym for LA Red Shield

The Salvation Army Los Angeles Red Shield Youth Center recently unveiled their new gymnasium, thanks to the financial support of the Los Angeles Lakers Foundation and the Los Angeles Sparks. The Lakers and Sparks paid for the cost of repairing, resurfacing and recoating the gym floor as well as painting the gym.

Samaki Walker of the World Champion Lakers and Latasha Byears of the World Champion Sparks were on hand for the unveiling. Both took the time to answer questions, sign autographs and remind the kids how important it is to stay in school.

Winters honored

Mary Winters, Grand Junction, Colo., was recognized and honored during a Sunday morning Holiness meeting, by Major Jeannie Potts-Bowler. “Mary has served faithfully and with excellence as Home League Secretary for the Grand Junction Corps for over 30 years,” said Potts-Bowler. Winters was also recognized at a Home League meeting.

WWI connection

Major Rick Peacock, Riverside corps officer, reports a donor from San Diego, Isabelle Barks, included the following note along with her check toward the March AFB deployment: “My uncle was a Salvation Army ambulance driver in World War I, along with the ‘Doughnut Girls’.”

Second Chances

The Western Territory’s Missing Persons Service (Major Leslie Peacock, director) offers hundreds of “second chances” to families each year as they bring together long separated family members. In 2002, the West opened 901 new cases, and reunited 420 families.

Museum of the West update

Mark your calendars—General John Gowans (R) will be participating in the Western Territory’s first Historical Symposium, which will be held at Crestmont Conference Center the week of November 16, 2003.

Museum memberships are a good way to stay informed of special events. An annual membership is $35 per year, a charter membership is $135 (a one-time subscription of $100 plus a $35 annual membership fee). Charter membership is only offered until January 31, 2004. faces of children prayer summit

A national prayer event calling Christians to pray for the many needs of the world’s vulnerable and hurting children will be held at The National Presbyterian Church, Washington D.C., June 11-12, 2003.
