Portland in the news
The Portland Tabernacle Corps has been busy! Captain Chris Mitchell reports they had an outstanding vacation Bible School, with an average of 45 children each day, assisted by a staff of over 20. In addition, seven junior soldiers were enrolled recently.
Musician/singer Karen Therese will perform September 22 at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts Dolores Winnigstad Theatre in a benefit concert for The Salvation Army West Women’s and Children’s Shelter (WWCS) and The Native American Youth and Family Center’s healing Circle Program. “Karen is not only a wonderfully moving and talented performer but also a very generous person who cares deeply about the issue of family violence,” said WWCS Director Patricia Mohr.

Happy birthday, Major!
Major Dolores Rivitt, O.F., celebrated her 80th birthday on August 31. The major’s first appointment from training college was to Sitka, Alaska in 1950, and her last appointment was as Alaska divisional secretary. After retiring in 1992, she continued working at DHQ as special services director for another 10 years. Many happy returns!

Auburn Home League helps the needy
The Auburn, Calif., Home League is 42 members strong, report Corps Officers Majors Ed and Joyce Loomis. Some members are soldiers at the corps and others are not otherwise connected to the Army. “Our ladies are very active and often do projects that assist the social services department,” said Loomis. “Recently, they put together 750 pounds of rice, beans and oatmeal, which our social services office will distribute needy families.”

New look to New Frontier online
Check out New Frontier’s new on-line look: www.salvationarmy.usawest.org/newfrontier. “The new site has a few additional features,” said Websites Services Manager John Docter, “including a ‘tell a friend’ feature where you can email a link to other people.” Docter redesigned it with New Frontier Art Director Kevin Dobruck. Nuevas Fronteras is also available on-line.

Training for disaster
The Western Territory now has over 1,500 people trained since January 2006, reports Monica Severson, territorial emergency and disaster service director. Courses include: Preparing Your Congregation for Disaster, Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), Emotional and Spiritual Care in Disasters, CPR/first aid, and others. A Lilly Foundation grant partially funds courses. Contact your divisional representative for information on training.
