Canoga Park Recovery Corps adds fight to Rose Parade

Eight of the 24 flag carriers in the 111th Tournament of Roses Parade were members of the Canoga Park, Calif., ARC Corps. For all eight, this was a once in a life experience. Five participants are graduates of the ARC program; two are parents of one of those graduates.

Corps Officer Captain Barbara Sloan encouraged the eight to get involved and be a part of a bigger Army picture. “Sharing time in our corps the next morning was an experience! To hear the emotional response from each participant was thrilling. We sometimes forget the first time we experienced the appreciation that the community feels for the Army.” The corps has been in operation since December of 1996.

“This was a great experience.” said Jason White, a recently made soldier and graduate of the Canoga Park ARC. “Three years ago I was homeless. There was little in my life that was good. I came to the ARC looking for help and a way to change my life. I had no idea what changes God and The Salvation Army could do in my life!”

Jason’s parents, Jim and Nancy White came to the corps as a result of Jason’s involvement with the ARC. Since that time they have become soldiers, local officers and are preparing to offer themselves to full time service within The Salvation Army. “God has really done his work in the lives of our family. We are very grateful.” White said.
