The Salvation Army exists to meet need without discrimination, and this year was no exception. More than ever, its programs to support kids and seniors, disaster survivors, hungry and unhoused people, single parents, and veterans made moments of joy possible.
Stories of joyful giving, even in the face of disaster and tremendous loss, remind us that there is hope to be found in the generosity of others—and that we are not alone.

1. School lunch recovery program reduces food waste to help others
In an effort to reduce food waste, the Alhambra (California) Unified School District created the Food Recovery Program. Through partnerships with community groups like The Salvation Army San Gabriel Corps, local organizations are able to put leftover food to good use feeding those in need.
2. Salvation Army spreads hope to survivors of Southern California wildfires
The Salvation Army’s Emergency/Disaster Services vehicles deployed throughout Southern California amid historic wildfires, meeting human needs by offering meals, refreshments and a listening ear, among other offerings.
3. Rileys to farewell from Western Territorial leadership
The Salvation Army Western Territory farewelled Commissioners Douglas and Colleen Riley from territorial leadership, as Douglas Riley retired from active service. In the new year, Colleen Riley will take on a new role as Territorial Officers Care and Support Secretary.
