An international effort to eradicate poverty

In an eight-part series, New Frontier is exploring the United Nations’ eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to eradicate poverty and achieve basic human rights for all people, and detailing Salvation Army work to accomplish the goals.

Goal 1: To eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
In Bolivia, a 25-bed Salvation Army hospital focuses on child health and pediatrics. A mobile feeding unit in the area has also helped develop a community health program.

In Pakistan, The Salvation Army’s Mother and Child Health Education (MACHE) Project, supported by the Switzerland, Austria and Hungary Territory, combines literacy education with health, hygiene and practical skills training. It is run in 21 Salvation Army centers and caters to roughly 1,000 women and hundreds of children at any time.

Goal 6: Combat AIDS, malaria and other diseases
Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
Goal 8: A global partnership for development
