Kettles visit Monday Night Football.

The Salvation Army teamed with the Pittsburgh Steelers to honor service members and support the Army’s disaster relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy before the NFL’s Monday night game Nov. 12 between the Steelers and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Heinz Field was adorned with 29 red Christmas kettles to raise funds for the Army’s Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

“When times are tough, you can always count on the Pittsburgh Steelers,” said Major William H. Bode, divisional leader for The Salvation Army’s Western Pennsylvania Division. “So many have suffered because of Hurricane Sandy and The Salvation Army is committed to the relief effort.”

Before kickoff, an on-field presentation honored several veterans, including a Pearl Harbor survivor, a World War II veteran and Tuskegee Airman, Korean War veteran, Vietnam War veteran, Desert Storm War veteran, Iraq War veteran and Afghanistan War veteran, who were all standing on the sidelines during the national anthem. Camouflage banners were visible throughout Heinz Field.

According to Fran Brace, director of development for The Salvation Army’s Western Pennsylvania Division, the Steelers have partnered with the Army for kettle donations for the past five years. This year, however, the money raised through the kettles was specially designated to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy, which ravaged large portions of the East Coast several weeks ago.
