The Grand Junction, Colo., Corps won first place out of 100 entries in the performance division of the local Annual Parade of Lights. The float was designed and decorated by beneficiaries of the Adult Rehabilitation Program and employees. The prize-winning performance was by a small choir made up mostly of beneficiaries and employees who sang traditional Christmas carols to a contemporary beat as they rode along.

Captain George Baker, corps officer, reports that “the men and employees did an excellent job in preparing the float and in representing the Army in this special community event.” Congratulations!

VETS VISITED

Major (Dr.) Sallyann Hood, Long Beach corps officer, and LOM Secretary Jack Stephens made a holiday visit to the Long Beach Veterans Administration Hospital. The group of 18 included several Auxiliary ladies, Colonel Gwen Luttrell, who soldiers at the corps, and her sister, Dr. Audrey Newman. They distributed 412 gifts (cosmetic packets at the request of the VA) and that most important gift of cheerful company and prayers to people who need them all year long.

CHRISTMAS PUBLICITY

We are grateful to numerous newspapers throughout the West who are giving the Army excellent coverage of our current Christmas ministry. Each day’s mail brings copies of descriptive articles highlighting our volunteers, officers, and multifaceted programs during this special season of the year.

Among the communities featuring our work are: San Diego, Tri-cities, and Susanville, Calif.; Casper, Wyo.; Las Vegas, Nev.; Anchorage, Alaska; and Medford, Twin Falls and Albany, Ore.

RADIO OUTREACH

Major Craig Madsen, commanding officer in Pleasanton, Calif., tells of their radio outreach over the Bay Area’s two prominent Christian stations. On Radio KCBC, there is a weekly show featuring Madsen’s Bible teaching. On Radio KFAX, they have an annual contract with the station to run 660 30-second spots. With some of these spots they are co-sponsoring their #1 show (“Lifeline with Craig Roberts”) which airs during each night’s peak commute.

TRADE EXPANDS HOURS

For the convenience of you who may be visiting in the area, Major Ralph Looker has begun Saturday hours at the Supplies and Purchasing Department at the Lomita THQ Annex. A Holiday Open House was held to make customers welcome. Crestmont officers and out of town visitors seem glad for the chance to shop on a weekend. Come by and see what Trade has to offer these days!

Don’t miss the November/December issues of New Man (Promise Keepers) and The Plain Truth magazines, which contain feature stories on the work of The Salvation Army. Both provide excellent information on the scope of the Army’s spiritual and social ministry.

Also in New Man is an article, “Single Woman Seeks a Man,” written by New Frontier’s managing editor, Sue Schumann.

DOLLS BRING SMILES

Major Gloria Utrera says over 400 dolls in handmade outfits were judged for the Tucson Temple Corps Doll Tea. Lovingly dressed by volunteers throughout the community, the dolls and teddy bears brought smiles to hundreds of children. An auction of winning dolls and bears brought in almost $700, cutting down the corps’ original cost of purchase.
