Williams honored
Alan Williams, Anchorage corps member and a retired vice president of the National Cooperative Bank, received the “Spirit of Cooperation” Award recently. The ceremony was held at the National Museum for the American Indian in Washington D.C. “Williams is also a member of the Anchorage Advisory Board and has served as past chairman of the Booth Memorial and McKinnell House Advisory Councils in Anchorage,” noted Major Lawrence Shiroma, Anchorage corps officer.

On the run
More than 150 runners and walkers turned out for The Salvation Army Southern California Division’s 1st Annual 5K Trail Run and 2K Nature Walk, appropriately named, “Run a Mile in My Shoes.” The event was held at Camp Mt. Crags and Camp Gilmore and raised more than $7,000 to send kids to camp. “Our goal is to make sure kids who otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to go to camp get there,” said Program Director Don Mowery, Jr. Sponsors included: the Cheesecake Factory, Enterprise Car Sales Division, and MSP Development Group.

Denver Red Shield honors 12
The Denver Red Shield recently honored twelve volunteers during a worship service. Lt. Colonel Raymond Peacock, Intermountain divisional commander, presented each with a framed certificate of recognition. Special recognition was given to City Council President Elbra Wedgeworth and to Bob Leino; both are active members of the Red Shield Advisory Council. Also present were Commissioners Phil and Pat Swyers, Lt. Colonels Raymond and Carolyn Peacock, Master Martial Arts Champion Karen Herdman and Hall of Fame heavyweight boxer Ron Lyle.

Colorado Springs has fun
Major David Howarth reports the Colorado Springs Corps recently hosted their annual Family Fun Fest, attended by several hundred people from the community. Attractions included: a Fort Carson Military Police dog team, police ID unit, hot rods, live music by the local Samoan Assemblies of God worship band, carnival games, lots of food and a car sledge hammer smash, with the car supplied by the local ARC. Corps folk mingled among the crowd sporting badges saying: “I come to this church and I luv it—ask me a question.” The Denver Harbor Light Center provided fun door prizes which brought everybody together for a finale. Attendees left with smiles and copies of the New Testament, details of corps worship and coming special events.

Ventura’s first
The Ventura, Calif., corps held its first Summer Day Camp, reported Captain Lourdes Griffith, associate corps officer. “Our total registration was 20 children, and the event was a great success; now our neighbors know we are a church as well, and some of these children will be attending our after-school programs soon.” Kids enjoyed field trips, cooking lessons, crafts and more. Captain Lynda Thompson is corps officer.
