The Phoenix Salvation Army’s website was one of two Phoenix websites named by the Web Marketing Association as 2003 WebAward recipients. The Army’s site, https://www.phoenixsalvationarmy.com, received the Standard of Excellence Award, as reported by The Business Journal.

Yakima features Mowery

Malcolm Arnett, chair of the Yakima, Wash., advisory board, reports Lt. Colonel Jan Mowery was keynote speaker at Yakima’s 109th annual meeting and luncheon. Mowery spoke about her three-month mission to Iraq.

Well done

A/Captain Martin Cooper was invited to be part of a 100 person group that met President George Bush at March Air Reserve Base in California. Most in the group were Air Force personnel; Cooper was invited because of The Salvation Army’s work in providing items for troops as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. “Over the past 10 months we’ve handed out over 800,000 items, including water, soda, snacks and 7,000 Bibles, plus more,” said Cooper.

While not close enough to shake hands, the President looked at Cooper and thanked him for the Army’s help. “Even though I didn’t get to shake the President’s hand, I’ve gotten to shake the hands of 65,000 Marines, Navy Seabees, Air Force and Army troops who have gone to Iraq,” Cooper stated. “We owe a lot to these young men and women who defend our freedoms.”

Latino family camp

More than 475 Salvationists and friends attended the Southern California Division’s Latino Family Camp, which featured special guests Dr. Juan Korsyk, president of “Voz de la Familia” (Voice of the Family), and his wife, Ester Mabel, who brought special music. Capt. Lourdes Griffith brought the message on Friday night; on Saturday, children and adults enjoyed the carnival, soccer, volleyball, swimming or just having a relaxing time. Major Mario Reyes is divisional secretary for Latino Programs.

Annual Christmas Bazaar

The Salvation Army’s San Francisco Women’s Auxiliary will hold its annual Christmas Bazaar on November 13 at The Salvation Army’s Divisional Headquarters; lunch will be prepared by the Meals That Heal program. A $10.00 donation is requested for lunch. “It is one of our biggest fundraisers,” said Pat Gray, the auxiliary’s current president.
“This group is serious about raising money,” reports Jennifer Byrd, SA public relations director. This year alone they donated $12,500 to various San Francisco City corps and programs, including summer day camp programs.

Army assists flood victims

Salvation Army personnel assisted residents of Skagit County, Wash., after record rains caused flooding. In Hamilton, reports Lonnie Franklin, NW divisional disaster services coordinator, the Army worked with the Red Cross in providing aid to the town’s 400 residents who were evacuated as rivers overflowed their banks; the entire town ended up submerged by the floodwaters.
In Snohomish County, the Everett Corps responded to local flooding by supplying 25 volunteers and a canteen. More than 450 meals were provided to victims; volunteers assisted with sandbagging as well.

New appointment

Majors William and Bernadita Begonia have been appointed corps officers (Pro-Tem) of the Murrieta Corps, Calif., effective November 17, 2003.
