Teamwork for Rotary

Major Rosalyn Mahr, who serves at the Evangeline Booth Hospital in Ahmednagar, India, reports a new 100 KVA generator was donated recently by the Rotary Club under a matching grant program. The Rotary Clubs in Ahmednagar and North Phoenix, Arizona, matched funds for it along with Rotary International. “Colonel Mervyn Morelock is a member of the Phoenix Club, and he was instrumental in pushing the project from their side,” said Mahr. “The whole project has taken three to four years, but finally we have the end product.”

Riverside multiplies for World Service

Major Dianne Bassett gave each of her adult Sunday school members one dollar in April, and challenged them to multiply it as described by Jesus in the parable of the talents (Matthew 25). Lt. Colonel Doug O’Brien multiplied his $1 into $51 that same day by re-selling the multiplication idea to other corps’ at the Divisional World Services Ingathering that evening. Bassett originally handed out $17 to her class. That turned into $1,250 two months later, with all the proceeds going to World Services.

Krupa Das, territorial commander of the India Northern Territory and national spokesperson for India, says “The Salvation Army in India can now reach people with its story at any time and in any part of the world.” Major Ted Mahr, executive secretary of the Salvation Army Health and Social Services Advisory Council, said, “In most parts of India very few people seem to be aware of the Army and its contribution to the life of society. With the Internet available at ‘cyber cafes,’ even in small towns, the web site promises to provide the public, especially young people, with an insight into The Salvation Army in India.”

Army responds to China quake

A 6.8 earthquake hit the Kashgar region of Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous region this spring, killing and injuring thousands of people as houses collapsed and electricity and water supplies failed. Salvation Army emergency workers immediately distributed 3,000 loaves of bread to the survivors. In addition to cash donations from the public, High Performance, a company owned by film star Jackie Chan, donated more than 1,700 down coats, 830 pieces of warm clothing, and 210 pairs of shoes to survivors.

Home League helps Liberia day care

The West’s Women’s Ministries department donated $19,000 to fund the St. Paul’s Bridge Day Care Center in Liberia. It now offers early education for 100 children and also houses the medical clinic. “It truly has become a center of good health for mothers and babies,” said International Projects Officer Major Seth Le Leu.

Clean water for Kaduku, Uganda

Funds from the Western Territory—$41,000— were sent to drill a borehole and provide pipes and a hand pump to provide a safe supply of drinking water at the Kaduku Salvation Army Corps, in a remote area in Kigumba, North Western Uganda.
Previously, Salvation Army officers and the surrounding community had to travel 6 kilometers to get water from the water supply dam, which was not fit for human consumption. The water was shared with dogs, domestic/wild animals, people bathing, and women doing washing.
