SF ARC program grows

Major Marilyn Gregory reports “On the first Wednesday in March, we graduated our 500th beneficiary since our coming to the San Francisco ARC in July, 1998 (our director of rehabilitation services, Philip Beebe, keeps close track of such things!). Since that date, five additional beneficiaries have completed the basic six-month program. Many graduates, especially males, are staying for Phase II of our program for an additional three months, and some then continue in Re-Entry which can last from one to three months.”

At every completion ceremony, those who have earned their high school diploma or a GED are also recognized. “That program, under the direction of Jim Wilson, Millard Charter School teacher, is a great additional bonus to our program.”

Leno headlines at Army fundraiser

Comedian Jay Leno came to Denver, Colo., to help The Salvation Army raise funds for its programs at a benefit dinner. With a rousing 1940’s theme, the inaugural event was wildly successful with great attendance, food, fun and dancing. The event garnered attention in daily newspapers as well as radio and television. The dinner was held in the Wings Over the Rockies, a former airplane hangar.

Leno also stayed and helped with the live auction in which he sold a Harley Davidson motorcycle, a real fighter pilot adventure with Skyfighters, and a golf tournament for 120 people. Also, Leno donated and auctioned four VIP tickets to The Tonight Show.

Advisory board member Roxanne Fie Anderson served as chair of the dinner committee.

Anacortes feeds the hungry

Employees of Alaska Ocean Seafood prepared a delicious baked cod luncheon for Anacortes, Wash., community members, which was held at The Salvation Army’s Anacortes Corps. Some of the 100 diners heard about the free lunch while picking up food at the Army’s food bank. Trident Seafoods of Anacortes and Food Services of America joined with Alaska Ocean Seafood to donate the feast. The meals were part of the At-sea Processors Association’s Community Catch program which serves 1 million meals each year for hunger relief.

Alaska Home leagues reach out

Captain Mariam Rudd and Major Vickie Shiroma report great news from the Alaska Home Leagues: the Homer Corps is giving over $800 as their divisional project to purchase one entire table for King’s Lake Camp; Mat-Su Corps installed 22 new H.L. local officers recently; the Korean Corps has established six Women’s Ministries outreach groups; and the Fairbanks Corps H.L. has submitted $1,000 for World Services.

Captain Brian Saunders reports that Major Noreen French, Oakland Garden Street chaplain, has recently earned a Master’s Degree in Nonprofit Administration from the University of San Francisco.
