Rose Center serves seniors
The Salvation Army Rose Center continues to grow in its services to senior citizens in the greater Portland, Ore., area, reports Rose Center Director Florence Schembs. “We recently began our respite care program for clients with signs of early dementia and/or Alzheimer’s. We hope to serve up to 10 clients a day whose caregivers need a break.

Respite Care Director Grace Rivera is a registered nurse who has developed a program filled with activities, songs and loving socialization utilizing some dedicated and wonderful volunteers who are senior citizens themselves.”

Young at heart
San Francisco Mission Corps, Envoys Mario and Maria Ruiz in-charge, reports that a centenarian and her septuagenarian son eat lunch at the center every day. The 106-year-old lady has a very lucid mind, talks and walks normally and is accompanied by her son who is 70-years-old. Another senior who is from El Salvador, a poet and painter, was recognized by officers of the city in a special day and received a reward from his country. A street was named after him in El Salvador.

Anchorage salutes vets
Anchorage, Alaska, area corps officers and League of Mercy workers participated in National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans’ Day by taking 13 dozen doughnuts and valentines to four veterans facilities in Anchorage, reports PR director Jenni Ragland. “The Salvation Army has participated in this event for many years and the veterans really appreciate this small token of recognition,” she said.

With 21 years of archiving to enrich it, there will soon be a new museum display room at the Crestmont College campus. “More artifacts are needed to help tell the Western Salvation story,” said territorial museum coordinator Frances Dingman. Retired officers Majors Bill and Bunny Lane will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on February 24, reports son Kevin Lane. They retired in 1994, after spending 40 years ministering in the West. Congratulations!
